Grab Bar Installation cost
A grab bar is only as good as what holds it behind the wall. Over studs it's a quick visit. On tile or a fiberglass surround it takes longer and needs different anchors. Per bar, expect about $108; we see $49 to $300.
The 24-inch stainless bars we checked at Home Depot ran $23 to $68. If the wall has no blocking where you want the bar, adding it means opening the wall, and that's beyond this guide.

one 24 in. stainless grab bar on drywall or tile over studs; fiberglass surrounds and adding blocking behind finished walls run longer. National OEWS mean wage used on this page: $25.86/hr (SOC 49-9071).
How the national mid is built
Before you enter a ZIP we use the U.S. OEWS mean wage for Maintenance and Repair Workers, General (SOC 49-9071): $25.86/hr (BLS OEWS May 2025). Mid estimate ≈ 1.25 hours × $25.86 × 2.25× markup + materials mid $35 (with a small regional materials factor). Low uses p10 wages × 2.0×; high uses p90 × 2.5×. National planning band: $49 – $108 – $300.

Materials band (cited retail)
Published materials low / mid / high: $23 / $35 / $68 (one 24 in. stainless grab bar on drywall or tile over studs; fiberglass surrounds and adding blocking behind finished walls run longer). Shelf checks that shaped the band (see also DATA_SOURCES):
24 in. stainless: Glacier Bay chrome ~$22.73 · Moen SecureMount ~$27.36–$34.11 · Moen peened ~$37.80 · Glacier Bay ADA ~$50.98 · Delta ~$58.21 · HealthCraft ~$67.99 (search). Per bar.
Before you put up a grab bar
- Studs or blocking, not drywall anchors. A grab bar has to hold a person's full weight when they slip. Ask the installer how they'll anchor it, and follow the bar maker's instructions for the wall type.
- Height matters. For public buildings, the 2010 ADA Standards, section 609 put horizontal bars at 33 to 36 inches above the floor. At home, set it where the person using it can reach comfortably; the ADA range is a good starting point.
- Tile and fiberglass take longer. Drilling tile needs the right bit and patience, and fiberglass tub surrounds often need special anchors. Expect a higher quote than drywall.
- Towel bars are not grab bars. Never use a towel bar or soap dish for support. Look for bars sold as grab bars with a stated weight rating.

What usually moves the number
- Stud location vs. where the bar needs to go
- Tile or fiberglass vs. drywall
- Number of bars per visit
- Concealed vs. exposed screw flanges
- Minimum trip charges

Grab Bar Installation FAQ
How much does grab bar installation cost?
About $108 at the US midpoint, with our range running $49 to $300. Enter your ZIP and the calculator swaps in local wages for maintenance and repair workers, general (BLS OEWS May 2025, SOC 49-9071). The national average wage we start from is $25.86 an hour.
Where do the hours and parts prices come from?
The hours (0.75 / 1.25 / 2.5) are our own estimates for the scope described on this page. Parts and materials ($23 / $35 / $68) come from store prices we checked and list on our data sources page. We multiply labor by 2.0, 2.25 or 2.5 to cover a contractor's overhead and profit; the methodology page explains why.
Is this a quote?
No. It's a planning range so you know roughly what to expect. When you're ready to hire, get written estimates from licensed pros. The FTC's home repair tip sheet says to get three, and to ask why they differ. Check what each one leaves out, like permits, haul-away and patching.
Any rebates or tax credits?
Fairange does not track assistance programs for home safety changes.
