Home repair cost calculator

Enter your ZIP, pick a job. We’ll show a mid estimate plus a low–high band — U.S. average OEWS wages until you enter a ZIP. The chart is intentionally simple — something you can screenshot and text to a spouse.

Seventy-plus jobs across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, appliances, and handyman work. Prefer a write-up first? Try a job guide or a metro ranking.

How to estimate a home repair cost

  1. Enter your ZIP — we map it to a BLS OEWS metro or nonmetro area (May 2025 file).
  2. Pick the job — choose the repair or install that matches your scope (or open a job guide first).
  3. Compare the low / mid / high band — then collect written bids; ask about anything far under our low end.

What this estimate can’t tell you. Roof pitch, an old house or code upgrades, tough access, permits, emergency or after-hours calls, and brand tier can push a real quote outside this range.

Calculator FAQ

Does every ZIP work?

Most U.S. ZIPs that map to a Census ZCTA do. We point each one at a BLS OEWS metro or nonmetro area from the May 2025 file.

Why a low / mid / high?

Hours and materials have ranges, wages have p10 / mean / p90 percentiles, and we apply published contractor markup of 2.0× (low) / 2.25× (mid) / 2.5× (high) on labor. One number would be a fake kind of precision. Markup is Fairange’s assumption — see methodology — not a BLS figure.

Are materials real shelf prices?

Where we publish a materials band, it comes from cited Home Depot or similar public retail listings documented in DATA_SOURCES — not Angi or HomeAdvisor tables. Each job guide links the shelf checks we used.

How do city guides relate?

Metro×trade pages use titles like “HVAC costs in [city]” and link into this calculator with a job pre-selected.
