Tank vs tankless water heater costs by U.S. region
Same plumber wage file, different job assumptions: tankless mid estimates run well above tank swaps in every Census region.
People ask whether tankless is “worth it.” We can’t answer the utility-bill half without rates and hot-water habits. We can show how our planning estimates compare once you put both jobs on the same plumber wage file.
Tankless carries higher equipment and hours in our job table (venting, gas upsizing, condensate). By Census region, average metro mid estimates look like this:
| Region | Tank mid | Tankless mid | Gap | Metros |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast | $1,318 | $3,319 | $2,001 | 49 |
| Midwest | $1,318 | $3,319 | $2,001 | 94 |
| South | $1,199 | $3,042 | $1,843 | 156 |
| West | $1,305 | $3,289 | $1,984 | 85 |
The South runs a bit cheaper on both in our file. plumber OEWS wages there. but the tankless premium stays large everywhere because of the job assumptions, not because one region “needs” different markup. Northeast and Midwest average almost the same on both jobs; the wage mix just lands that way.
For tankless alone, mainland metro mids span about $1,107 from Hot Springs ($2,848) to San Jose ($3,955).

What drives the price
- Unit type: gas tankless vs electric; heat-pump water heaters are a third path.
- Gas line and venting: upsizing and new vents are why tankless hours run higher in our baseline.
- Location: attic, garage, or closet changes labor.
- Rebates and tax credits: check IRS §25C and DSIRE; we don’t bake unstable credit dollars into the chart.
How to tell if your quote is fair
- Compare apples: tank-for-tank vs tank-to-tankless are different scopes.
- Ask whether gas upsizing, venting, and condensate are included.
- Put both jobs through the calculator: tank vs tankless.
- If a tankless bid lands near our tank band, ask what equipment they’re installing.
