Washer Hookup (Outlet Box) Installation cost
Replacing exposed washer valves with a recessed outlet box gives you shutoffs you can reach and a neater drain. It's plumbing with a little drywall work, around $277 nationally, in a $120 to $722 range.
Outlet boxes on the Home Depot site listed at $35 to $70. The pricier ones include water hammer arrestors. Moving the laundry or running new drain lines is a bigger job.

replace old exposed washer valves with a recessed outlet box (hot/cold valves and drain) in an open or easy-to-open stud wall; new drain lines or a new laundry location are out of band. National OEWS mean wage used on this page: $34.70/hr (SOC 47-2152).
How the national mid is built
Before you enter a ZIP we use the U.S. OEWS mean wage for Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters (SOC 47-2152): $34.70/hr (BLS OEWS May 2025). Mid estimate ≈ 3.0 hours × $34.70 × 2.25× markup + materials mid $43 (with a small regional materials factor). Low uses p10 wages × 2.0×; high uses p90 × 2.5×. National planning band: $120 – $277 – $722.

Before you add a washer outlet box
- Know your pipe. Boxes are sold for copper, PEX, or push-to-connect fittings. Take a photo of the pipes behind the washer so you or the plumber buy the right one.
- Consider water hammer arrestors. If pipes bang when the washer shuts off, a box with built-in arrestors costs a bit more and usually fixes it.
- Check the drain. The box includes a drain opening, but an old or too-short standpipe or trap may need work too. Ask if that's in the quote.
- Plan for the wall. The box goes into the wall, so there will be a drywall cut. Ask whether patching and paint are included.

What usually moves the number
- Pipe type (copper, PEX, CPVC)
- Whether water hammer arrestors are added
- Drywall cut and patch

Where do the hours and parts prices come from?
The hours (2.0 / 3.0 / 5.0) are our own estimates for the scope described on this page. Parts and materials ($35 / $43 / $70) are based on store shelf prices we recorded; the listings and dates are on our data sources page. We multiply labor by 2.0, 2.25 or 2.5 to cover a contractor's overhead and profit; the methodology page explains why.
Is this a quote?
No. It's a planning range so you know roughly what to expect. When you're ready to hire, get written estimates from licensed pros. The FTC's home repair tip sheet says to get three, and to ask why they differ. Check what each one leaves out, like permits, haul-away and patching.
Any rebates or tax credits?
Fairange does not track rebates for laundry plumbing.
